Well sprung

Borrowing half of Monday from last week and Friday from the one before, I joined Tash for a weekend in Joppa/Portobello; Edinburgh on Sea – Saturday in town visiting galleries, Sunday walking the coast. We caught a bus east along the firth, got off at the river Esk and walked beside the river and theContinue reading “Well sprung”

Green because it’s moldy?

Scullery: I picked up where I left off, adding a floor to the right hand cupboard under the scullery (‘the second kitchen’ as Chris calls it…)sink. A shelf followed for the left hand cupboard, which is where we’ll hide – and use – the microwave. We need left and right hand drawers so I’ll need toContinue reading “Green because it’s moldy?”

New glasses, some driftwood

Time to fix that piece of sea-smoothed gorse wood and a hook for the shopping list onto the larder door. The door is an insubstantial affair, skinned with thin hardboard on softwood edges. Fixings away from the edges need reinforcement, in this case ply patches. In the magic room the new shelf and cupboard unit needed itsContinue reading “New glasses, some driftwood”

February blues. And greys

It’s been another four-day week; not complaining. I’ve used the time to crack on with the project in the magic room (so called because from the first time we walked in it felt unexpectedly special). For the cupboard I’ve made bottoms/floors, doors, shelves and shelf supports, though the latter won’t be fixed until we can check theContinue reading “February blues. Enough shelves and cupboards?

Can one have enough shelves and cupboards?  WORK: I don’t know, but I’ve ended the week feeling positive, new shelves and cupboards standing firm in the magic room (Bedroom 3 on planning drawings), attached to the wall and the floor and surprisingly level and plumb! I did my best with limited resources, cutting the plywood sheetsContinue reading “Enough shelves and cupboards?”

the frail and feeble hand of archaic man…

First, Christmas and wildlife: Martin and some rather wet and cloudy weather came for a week over Christmas. Our Christmas day walk was relatively local, plans altered three times owing to unrealistic ambition and an untimely high tide, but the weather was kind, dramatic without being uncomfortable. Near to the beach and close at hand a striking black,Continue reading “the frail and feeble hand of archaic man…”

Sunrise 08:45, sunset 15:44

Thwarted: we planned to watch solstice sun rise from the top of Dun Add, the ancient stronghold thirty miles north, commanding the river and southern end of Kilmartin Glen, but the cloud stayed low, thick with constant rain. We stayed in bed. At eight the previous morning we lay in bed in the dark with the skylightContinue reading “Sunrise 08:45, sunset 15:44”
