The rain starts, the rain stops, starts again and gets heavier. Our visitors, Simon, Eloisa and Lorenzo, due to continue their holiday further north, turn south and head for home. Within two hours the sun is out and the next day is sunny. When to cut your losses; a tricky call. At least they hadContinue reading “Summer rain”

Marmoleum zing
House: the spare Marmoleum – real lino (linseed oil, wood flour, limestone, and jute) – is no longer under the spare bed, but glued to the backs of the kitchen units, hiding the random plywood I’d added to the Ikea hardboard. Too much? An audacious move? We like the way it fits the colours ofContinue reading “Marmoleum zing”
“A bit autumnal”?
1 August 2024: I’m thinking fish and Tash is thinking fungi. She says, It’s probably time we went to check for chanterelles don’t you think? I agree. Although I’d not have got round to it quite yet, last year we did feel we’d missed the best of the penny buns and early chanterelles. We agreeContinue reading ““A bit autumnal”?”
Helping, getting in the way, or fishing.
A few times recently, when I’ve woken at four in the morning, there’s a light on the hill a mile away, where a forestry vehicle is felling timber; somebody is keen. I made the next two doors for the guest bedroom’s eves cupboards, then after the third ran out of hinges. More hinges are onContinue reading “Helping, getting in the way, or fishing.”
Well sprung
Borrowing half of Monday from last week and Friday from the one before, I joined Tash for a weekend in Joppa/Portobello; Edinburgh on Sea – Saturday in town visiting galleries, Sunday walking the coast. We caught a bus east along the firth, got off at the river Esk and walked beside the river and theContinue reading “Well sprung”
Green because it’s moldy?
Scullery: I picked up where I left off, adding a floor to the right hand cupboard under the scullery (‘the second kitchen’ as Chris calls it…)sink. A shelf followed for the left hand cupboard, which is where we’ll hide – and use – the microwave. We need left and right hand drawers so I’ll need toContinue reading “Green because it’s moldy?”
New glasses, some driftwood
Time to fix that piece of sea-smoothed gorse wood and a hook for the shopping list onto the larder door. The door is an insubstantial affair, skinned with thin hardboard on softwood edges. Fixings away from the edges need reinforcement, in this case ply patches. In the magic room the new shelf and cupboard unit needed itsContinue reading “New glasses, some driftwood”
Enough shelves and cupboards?
Can one have enough shelves and cupboards? WORK: I don’t know, but I’ve ended the week feeling positive, new shelves and cupboards standing firm in the magic room (Bedroom 3 on planning drawings), attached to the wall and the floor and surprisingly level and plumb! I did my best with limited resources, cutting the plywood sheetsContinue reading “Enough shelves and cupboards?”
